About the Skinny Pig (me)…
Hi, my name is Alex (short for Alexander), born in Illford, UK and raised in Greece. I have spent the better part of my life in the southern suburbs of Athens, ehm… on a bike!
I have been riding a bicycle since I learned how to walk. I started riding mountain bikes competitively at age 16 and got sponsored by Kassimatis Cycling (at the time, the Greek distributor for Mongoose Bicycles, Marzocchi Suspension, Bell Helmets a.o.) at age 18 (1995). Shortly after that, KRD (at the time distributor for Troy Lee Designs, Fox Racing, Spy Optics) and Animal Sportwatches followed.
While racing, I studied Sports Psychology. In 1999, I stopped competing and studied Multimedia Programming for a year (my other great love was -and still is- computers & technology).
In 2003 I got into road cycling, and in early 2004 I started taking part in epic road-rides known as Brevets, covering distances from 200Km to 600Km (ok, most I ever covered was 318Km). Although these rides could not be considered as competitive events (a medal goes to every rider who finishes within the given timeframe), they re-sparked my interest in competitive cycling events. So, in April 2005, I took part in the UCI MTB Marathon World Cup in Cyprus, finishing 36th out of 42 starters (I need to translate my Greek article about that experience to post it here).
Since then, I have raced various events such as the Greek MTB Open Cup, the X-Poros, and anything else that appealed to me.
I also occasionally practice water sports such as Wakeboarding & Kneeboarding, mostly during the warm months.
Oh, well so much for now, wouldn’t want to bore you!
